Bible verses for when everything feels heavy

Some seasons are not one bad day but a long grey stretch, where getting up is the hardest thing you do. The Bible has words for that, including honest ones. Some of these are prayers from people who felt exactly this way. If you are thinking about hurting yourself, please read the note just below first.

If things get dark

stll is an AI companion, not a crisis service. There is no staffed emergency response, and automated flags do not mean anyone has received or read your message. We cannot locate you or send help, and writing here does not notify emergency services. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 in the US or your local emergency number. For suicide or emotional crisis support in the US, call or text 988, or text HOME to 741741. Outside the US: findahelpline.com. Do not wait for a reply from stll or from us.

  1. “Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence. My God, my soul is in despair within me. Therefore I remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon, from the hill Mizar.”
    Psalm 42:5-6
  2. “How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart every day? How long shall my enemy triumph over me?”
    Psalm 13:1-2
  3. “I waited patiently for the LORD. He turned to me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand. He has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God. Many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”
    Psalm 40:1-3
  4. “He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat!” He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The LORD’s angel came again the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” He arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, God’s Mountain.”
    1 Kings 19:5-8
  5. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burnt, and flame will not scorch you.”
    Isaiah 43:2
  6. “This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope. It is because of The LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.”
    Lamentations 3:21-23

If you would rather talk it through

stll (say “still”) is a Christian companion you can talk to at any hour. She listens, she remembers what you told her last time, and when she shares a verse it comes from a real Bible. She is an AI, not a pastor or a counsellor, and she will never pretend otherwise.
